The Energy Storage Partnership (ESP) Reaches Key Milestone – Fifth Anniversary!
Established in May 2019, during the Clean Energy Ministerial in Vancouver, Canada, the ESP has thrived and expanded thanks to the collective efforts, dedication, and shared vision of our partners. Hosted by the World Bank’s Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP), ESP stands proudly as a global alliance of partners from diverse sectors and regions, united by its commitment to advancing energy storage solutions in developing countries for a sustainable future. To integrate variable renewable energy resources into grids, energy storage is key. Energy storage allows for the increased use of wind and solar power, which can not only increase access to power in developing countries, but also increases the resilience of energy systems, improve grid reliability, stability, and power quality, essential to promoting the productive uses of energy. |

ESMAP at the Summit on Clean Cooking in Africa
Organized by IEA, the Summit convened 1000+ delegates, including 55 government delegations, convening 4 Heads of Government in Paris, and 23 ministers in attendance. At the Summit, the Government of Denmark, an ESMAP donor, announced mobilizing public and private sector financing for clean cooking of at least DKK 500 million (Danish kroner; USD$70-75 million) over the coming years, starting with USD$20 million new funding for the World Bank Clean Cooking Fund. Also, together with the African Energy Commission (AFREC) and MECS, and supported by #ESMAP, we announced that the joint publication: Sustainable Scaling: Meeting the Cooking Challenge in Africa is now open for public consultation. While another stakeholder, Shell, announced that it will help millions of people in underserved communities get access to electricity and improved cooking conditions as defined in the platform launched in June 2015 by #ESMAP, the Multi-Tier Framework (MTF), which collects a comprehensive set of data at the country level and analyzes it to deliver an innovative narrative about a country’s energy status, acknowledging that electricity access is a spectrum of service levels experienced by households, businesses, and institutions, and using that knowledge to inform the policy-making process.

With the collaboration of the National Energy Authority of Papua New Guinea, the World Bank/ESMAP team launched the first Global Energy Access Households Surveys in Papua New Guinea in 2021 to establish a baseline for tracking progress toward the Sustainable Development Goal 7 target 7.1: ensure access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable modern energy for all by 2030.
