PAST EVENT | ECCH/Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves Launch

Nearly 3 billion people – more than the populations of China and India combined rely on wood or other biomass energy for cooking and heating. Every year, 3 to 4 million die from indoor air pollution, resulting in a social cost of about US$123 billion. Investment needs to tackle the issue are estimated to be at least US$4.4 billion annually. Safe, affordable and accessible clean cooking and heating solutions exist, but a robust global push is needed to accelerate their adoption. ESMAP's Efficient, Clean Cooking and Heating (ECCH) Program coordinates work across the energy, health, environment, agriculture, climate change and gender teams of the World Bank, and convenes global partners to mobilize finance, promote innovation and share knowledge. Currently, ESMAP supports two World Bank regional programs in Africa and Central America, and 9 individual countries - India, Nepal, Lao PDR, Kenya, Uganda, China, Indonesia, Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan.

The ECCH Community of Practice (CoP) is a collaboration tool, open to both internal and external audiences, intended to facilitate knowledge sharing, discussion and debate, serve as a repository for events, reports, project updates, and connect stakeholders working to increase access to clean cooking and heating. During the soft launch, we hope to obtain your feedback, and we encourage you to join the CoP to begin engaging and sharing.
