PRESENTATION | RECORDING
In this session, the first in a series, ESMAP and the Transport Global Practice Webinar Series explored sustainable aviation fuels as a critical solution for cleaner air travel and a vehicle for job creation.
Aviation is a key driver of economic growth and development, connecting people and goods. Liquid fuels will remain essential for aviation in the coming decades, and sustainable aviation fuels stand out as the most promising path to reducing emissions. These next generation fuels can deliver significant lifecycle carbon reductions—up to 80% in some cases compared to fossil fuels—without requiring major changes to existing aircraft or fueling infrastructure. The refining industry, however, needs to be reshaped to fully support the volumes required to reach net-zero emissions.
During the webinar, participants heard the overview of sustainable aviation fuels, guiding them through the feedstocks and technologies used to produce them, their current state of development, and the challenges and opportunities for scaling up.
