Providing Safe and Clean Household Energy for the Poorest is Priority
ESMAP is preparing a state of the cookstoves sector report in close collaboration with the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves. The report will document international clean cookstoves dissemination experiences, summarize challenges and barriers to large scale adoption of clean cooking fuels and stoves, and recommend appropriate intervention strategies. It will inform a priority intervention road map that the Alliance is preparing to guide future implementation efforts. ESMAP joined the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves last year and has been a partner to create a thriving global market for clean and efficient household cooking solutions. Furthermore, a new Bank report on cookstoves was presented at an event organized by the UN Foundation-led Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, at the Vienna Energy Forum.

New Study: CSP Local Manufacturing is Feasible in MENA Countries
A new ESMAP-funded study assesses the potential for job and wealth creation in solar energy producing countries of the Middle East and North Africa region. If the CSP market grows rapidly over the next few years, equipment manufacturing will be essential to supply this new sector. This study proposes roadmaps and an action plan to help develop the potential of locally manufactured CSP components in the existing industry and for new market entrants. The findings of the study were presented to MENA representatives of the manufacturing industry, project developers, banks, research centers and government in a workshop organized by the World Bank and the government of Morocco. The workshop titled: Concentrated Solar Power: Local Manufacturing and Job Creation Potential in Morocco took place in Skhirat, Morocco on June 2. Learn more.

New Briefing Notes Summarize ESMAP's Support to South Africa's Energy Conservation and Efficiency Measure
ESMAP has released two briefing notes summarizing its support to South Africa on energy conservation and efficiency measures, as part of its Low Carbon Growth Country Studies Program. The first report focuses on international experience in implementing the Standard Offer Model and its application to South Africa to promote energy efficiency and demand side management projects. The second report presents best practices and lessons learned from Brazil's power rationing experience and California's response to the power crises and identifies key options for implementation of market-based power rationing program in South Africa. Using Results-Based Approaches to Deliver Clean Energy
As part of ESMAP's new work program exploring results-based approaches to energy sector development, ESMAP delivered a presentation to energy experts and country representatives at the 2011 Climate Investment Funds Partnership Forum in Cape Town, in June. ESMAP gave a presentation to the Scaling-Up Renewable Energy Program's Sub-Committee on results-based financing, with a particular focus on some of the instruments that might be relevant to SREP. Oliver Knight, Senior Energy Specialist at ESMAP also participated in a side event hosted by the Government of Norway, DFID and ESMAP to present on Norway's Energy+ initiative and results-based approaches.  Learn more.
