Energy Poverty:  We work to reduce energy-poverty in rural areas, bring together best-practices for alleviating poverty through the energy sector, and expand activities in fast-growing peri-urban areas.  Particular attention is given to gender considerations of energy access.

Energy Security:  We help design policies for the poorest countries and for low income people that take into account factors of vulnerability or instability, such as the dependence on a few fuel resources, fuel price volatility, systems unreliability or income fluctuations.

* Energy Efficiency:  ESMAP's current energy efficiency portfolio has 27 projects targeted at reducing the barriers that prevent developing governments from implementing energy efficiency programs, policies, and financial solutions.  The host of the Energy Efficiency Thematic Group, ESMAP is helping convert the enormous potential of energy efficiency improvements into large scale investments.

Market Efficiency and Governance:  Our work in this area facilitates the mobilization of financing for energy investments and services.   This entails advising on most effective policies, building-up country regulatory and implementation capacity, and developing the capability of entrepreneurs, utilities and domestic financial institutions.

Renewable Energy:  We offer solutions for countries to secure and diversify their energy resource portfolios, increase the availability of energy services in un-served areas, in particular where the poorest people live, and accelerate the shift to a low carbon global economy.

* Small and Medium Enterprise:  The purpose of this focus area is to foster the development of small and medium sized enterprises that provide energy services to both poor people and people in remote areas, including those in peri-urban areas, small towns, and rural areas.
