Among 2006 activities, the benefit of regional integration in this region was the focus of a major ESMAP activity which examined the technical, economic, environmental, and financial aspects of gas integration among the countries of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay, and the results of which were presented in a regional workshop. The FY2007 portfolio of LAC includes a range of new projects spanning from regional energy trade to country level energy sector and climate strategy analyses.

In Brazil and Mexico, the emphasis of ESMAP support will be providing AAA for developing low carbon growth strategy for climate change mitigation, in support of the Bank’s initiatives under the Clean Energy Investment Framework.   Given intense interest worldwide in biofuels, the region is examining the economics of biodiesel production and use in Brazil, looking at the production of different feedstock under different production conditions. Another activity, being jointly implemented with IEA and IADB, is looking at developing energy efficiency indicators in G+5 countries, with emphasis on Mexico and Brazil.

Energy security concerns round out ESMAP’s regional strategy, including country studies in Ecuador and Honduras – which face energy shortages - aimed at developing a robust strategy for energy supply, a Central America regional trade project to examine market agreements related to export and import of energy, and increasing the capacity of the regional markets to integrate to facilitate the development of new supply sources and improve service delivery.
