Renewable Energy Resource Mapping in Vietnam

Summary

To accelerate the expansion of renewable energy the Government of Vietnam has requested the support of the World Bank and ESMAP’s Renewable Energy Resource Mapping Initiative to help improve the country’s knowledge and awareness of biomass, small hydro, wind energy resources. The wind mapping has generated initial outputs, and that component is now proceeding to Phase 2 (ground-based data collection).

The wind mapping is building on two previous efforts, including the Wind Energy Resource Atlas for the Pacific Islands and South East Asia, which resulted from a project funded by the Asia Sustainable and Alternative Energy Program (ASTAE) in 2001, and the Wind Resource Atlas of Vietnam, which was the output from an ESMAP-funded project and was published in 2011. The preliminary and unvalidated output under this activity (see link to Mesoscale Modeling Report below) represents a major improvement over both these two previous efforts as a result of utilizing the latest methodologies and data.

Under a partnership between the Government of Vietnam, the World Bank, and GIZ (the German technical development agency), data from an ongoing wind measurement campaign funded by GIZ (10 sites) is being hosted and published by the World Bank alongside data from a previous World Bank funded campaign (three sites). Under this ESMAP-funded activity the World Bank will obtain data over two years from six new sites, plus LIDAR measurements from multiple sites, to fill in gaps in the center and north of the country. This will be combined with the existing GIS and World Bank data to validate the preliminary modeling outputs and produce the final Vietnam Wind Atlas in 2018.

Solar mapping: This was commissioned by AECID (the Spanish technical development agency) in partnership with MOIT, and carried out by CENER and CIEMAT. The GIS outputs presented below are hosted by the World Bank Group on their behalf.

Outputs

The Wind and Solar data can be viewed via the IRENA Global Atlas using a web browser. GIS layers for the key solar mapping outputs as well as maps and posters can be downloaded from the Global Solar Atlas. The measurement data is hosted and it is freely available on the EnergyData platform. Other outputs are listed below by project component.
