Renewable Energy Resource Mapping in Ethiopia

Summary

Ethiopia has already some experience with wind power and based on this, the country is aiming to expand generation from wind further. However, with 32MW installed capacity, less than 1% of the wind potential is currently being exploited. This has led to Ethiopia’s inclusion in ESMAP's Renewable Energy Resource Mapping initiative.

In Ethiopia the main source of power production is hydropower. However, periodic drought, seasonal swings in production, and the favorable daily production curve of wind make combining wind and hydropower an attractive proposition for Ethiopia. While keeping a 20% maximum wind penetration, the 2014 Generation Transmission Master Plan proposed to add 900MW by 2020.

This activity will guide the future scaling-up of wind power by confirming the resource potential and supporting the Government of Ethiopia and commercial developers in utilizing the data obtained. There is also interest in expanding the activity to cover other renewable energy resources, starting with solar, if additional funding can be secured.
