ESMAP Joins UN’s Global Alliance for Clean Cook stoves
ESMAP has joined the new UN Global Alliance for Clean Cook stoves initiative to improve the lives of the three billion people who still rely on inefficient biomass stoves. “ESMAP brings to this Global Alliance a wealth of experience and lessons learned in designing and promoting clean cook stoves in low income countries,” says Rohit Khanna ESMAP’s Program Manager. Energy Needs of Mega-cities Can Be Met Efficiently, Says ESMAP Expert at World Energy Congress
At the just concluded 21st Annual World Energy Congress, in Montreal Canada, The Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) joined a panel of experts to discuss challenges facing the energy industry in providing for the world’s expanding urban populations. ESMAP's participation generated an article that was published in the World Energy Congress Daily Magazine, where ESMAP discussed ways to efficiently meet energy needs of mega-cities. Learn more.
Highlight: ESMAP’s Energy and Climate Adaptation Initiative Develops Climate Adaptation Planning Tool for Energy Sector
ESMAP’s Energy and Climate Adaptation Initiative has registered progress is developing and testing processes to mainstream climate risk management and adaptation into energy sector planning. ESMAP has developed a “Hands-on Energy Adaptation Toolkit”, or HEAT, to help policy-makers and senior energy utility managers assess climate risks and integrate adaptation options in the energy sector. Learn more.
Developing Countries Must Make Energy Efficiency a Pillar in Building Construction
Pursuing energy efficiency in new buildings is vital for developing countries. The building sector offers the largest potential for cost-effective GHG mitigation potential in the next two decades, says Expert. Recently, ESMAP discussed benefits of mainstreaming building energy efficiency codes in developing countries at a workshop organized by Asia-Pacific Energy Research Center in Bangkok, Thailand, September 8 -10, 2010. A Wind Measuring Tool Could Accelerate Deployment of Electricity in Developing Countries
A new report offers practical advice to energy practitioners, policy planners and potential wind developers on how to asses and utilize a wind measurement tool called Meso Scale Wind Mapping Model. Globally, about 80 countries use wind power on a commercial basis. But most developing countries lack the technology to accurately measure the strength and frequency of wind speed, a necessity for deploying wind energy. Learn more.
Africa: “Let there be light” – the Economist Magazine Writes About ESMAP’s Funded Initiative
The Economist Magazine recently wrote about the impact of the ESMAP funded Lighting Africa Initiative in making access to electricity a reality to over 1.5 billion people. The article stemmed from a conference organized by the World Bank - “Lighting Africa” in Nairobi. The conference aimed to stimulate the private-sector to come up with lighting solutions for the poor. Lighting Africa Initiative (link to a 6 minute video) is a multi-donor program implemented by The World Bank’s Africa Renewable Access Program. Learn more.
