SOLAR ENERGY IN HYBRID PLANTS FOR OFF-GRID POWER SUPPLY

With the commercial maturation of various small-scale, renewable energy–based technologies— from solar photovoltaic systems to small wind generators and micro hydropower—along with the evolution of battery storage and innovative service delivery models, hybrid off-grid systems have emerged as a viable solution for increasing electricity access, especially in remote and dispersed communities. More recently, the dramatic rise in fuel prices has further increased the economic attractiveness of these technology options. Among the multilateral development banks, the World Bank is a leading supporter of off-grid electrification, with projects in more than 25 countries.

Attendees will learn about design principles and key factors to overcome hybrid generation challenges, such as variability of renewables and fluctuating load. Power Management Systems (PMS) will be described, as a critical tool to achieve the most economical generation. The presentation will focus on the requirements that photovoltaics (PV) must meet to integrate an optimized hybrid solution, with a calculation example of profitability in the Bahamas.

The speaker will give us also a flavor of hybrid future trends, including substitution of diesel by efficient biomass, increased integration of storage and clean electrolytic hydrogen. Introduction | Silvia Martinez Romero, Senior Renewable Energy Specialist, ESMAP Speaker | Torsten Wetzel, Business Development Manager for Distributed Power Generation, Siemens
