Energy and Climate Adaptation

ESMAP’s Climate Adaptation program aims to develop and test processes to mainstream climate risk management and adaptation into energy sector planning and operations and to support awareness raising and knowledge transfer within the World Bank and with clients and external stakeholders.

The approaches and expected outputs of the program include:

Energy Vulnerability to Climate Change Briefing Notes

This project will develop an approach for initial screening of potential climate stressors in the energy sector, by identifying current and potential risks and sector vulnerabilities, as well as potential adaptation options. This will be piloted in up to three countries and guidance for energy sector task managers will be developed and disseminated. The project will complete in mid 2011.

ESMAP is working to ensure the effective, broad and timely sharing of knowledge, analytical approaches and models/tools that have accumulated through the Pilot Climate Vulnerability, Risk and Adaptation Assessments in the energy sectors of Albania and Uzbekistan. ESMAP aims to raise awareness with and help increase the capacity of low- and middle-income developing countries to undertake similar assessments.

The climate adaptation program employs a learning-by-doing approach, working with subject matter experts, energy practitioners and World Bank specialists engaged on climate change.
